By trekking down the canyon – located in the heart of the grandest Natural Park in Sardinia – you can get in touch with the impressive animal and plant wildlife of the Mediterranean.

Additionally, you’ll be visiting a mysterious and magical gorge home to strange creatures living in Sardinian legends.

Are you ready for this extraordinary experience? Let’s dive into it.

HOW TO GET THERE

There are actually four different ways or paths to reach Gorropu.

The starting point for the most difficult path is the tableau – known in Italian as Supramonte – of either Oliena, Orgosolo or Urzulei. From there, an expert guide can take you through the Park mountains to the canyon of Gorropu.

It’s a long road and it requires being expert in mountain climbing. If you’re interested, read below and book your tour.

If you are an explorer with no climbing ambitions, there are three easier routes to reach Gorropu. Just choose the most convenient one between the options here below.

BASE CAMP GORROPU – THE EASIEST

Start on your trekking from the Base Camp Gorropu.

You can board a Jeep to cover a 5 km panoramic road down to the Flumineddu river. From there, you only need to walk for about 2,5 km down to Gorropu. Which you can cover in approximately 45 minutes of easy trekking.

GHENNA SILANA – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL

Start on your trekking to Gorropu from the pass of Ghenna Silana. Leave your car in the free parking area and prepare to walk the most beautiful path to the canyon. The itinerary stretches over 4 km and a drop of 650 metres. Prepare for a 2-hour walk down and an approximately 2,5-hours walk back up – unless you’d like to book a Jeep ride on your way back.

ABBA ARVA BRIDGE – THE LONGEST

Start from the small Abba Arva Bridge and walk by the Flumineddu river for about 6,5 km.

After about 2,5 hours of trekking inside the majestic canyon, you’ll arrive at Gorropu.

PARK REGULATION – WHICH RULES YOU HAVE TO OBSERVE

Gorropu is part of the National Park of Gennargentu and the Gulf of Orosei. As such, special rules apply to your visit.

Always respect nature inside the canyon and on your trekking path. This includes:

  • leaving all plants where they are
  • leaving all rocks where they are
  • taking all plastic or paper bags back with you
  • keeping silence so as to disturb as little as possible the wildlife animals
  • never throw anything inside water pools
  • never make a fire

To ensure your safety, the park rangers also recommend:

  • using the protective helmet handed out free-of-charge at the base camp
  • wearing trekking shoes
  • leaving trekking sticks at home or in the car and walking with free hands
  • watching your steps and never jumping on stones
  • in case of rocks falling down from the rims of the canyon, immediately get as close as possible to the canyon walls, face to the wall, and wait until it’s safe to move forward again
